All Voices Matter: Celebrating AAC Awareness Month

October is AAC Awareness Month! But what exactly is AAC, and why is it so important for families?

AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. It includes tools and strategies that support or replace spoken language. AAC can look like communication boards, speech-generating devices, picture cards, sign language, or even simple visual supports. The goal is to give children every possible way to express their thoughts, needs, and feelings.

At PRE BOX, we believe that every child deserves a voice. Communication isn’t one-size-fits-all. Some kids speak with words, while others communicate best through pictures, symbols, gestures, or devices. No matter the method, what matters most is that every child is understood and valued.

That’s why PRE BOX include visual supports and sensory play tools to make communication easier, fun, and natural for families at home. Play is one of the best ways to build communication skills, and when children feel safe and supported, they are more likely to try new ways of expressing themselves.

This AAC Awareness Month, we encourage parents to celebrate all the ways their child communicates. Whether it’s a word, a gesture, pointing to a picture, or using a device, each attempt is communication and it matters.

Practical ways parents can support AAC at home:

  • Model AAC use! If your child has a device or picture system, show them how you use it too.
  • Celebrate every communication attempt.
  • Create opportunities for choice.
  • Keep AAC available everywhere.
  • Be patient.

Together, we can make sure every child’s voice is heard at home, at school, and in the community.
