The Science behind PRE BOX

PRE BOX utilizes the Emotional Regulation Approach (ERA) to prepare children for new experiences that, in some cases, can lead to emotional dysregulation and subsequently, to problem behaviors while participating in new experiences.

“In an ERA, most problem behaviors are viewed as outcomes of a dysregulated emotional/physiological state. For example, disruptive behavioral patterns (such as screaming or repeated questioning); harmful behavior (such as kicking or biting); or attempts to disengage (such as shutdown and bolting) are considered the individual’s response to dysregulation.

The overarching goals of an ERA are to support an individual’s emotional well-being to maximize availability for active engagement and learning; expand emotional regulatory abilities; and foster the development of secure, trusting relationships. Since the focus is not simply on reducing problem behavior, a plan is implemented prior to the occurrence of problem behavior”
(Prizant, 2011)

Every PRE BOX is designed to increase emotional regulation in the following ways:

• To provide children with strategies and supports to enhance their social participation and engagement in a new experience.

• To give children and adults the tools to lessen the intensity, duration, and frequency of problem behaviors in a new experience.

Founder & Owner of PRE BOX

Rachel

I’m a pediatric Speech and Language Pathologist living in Dallas, TX with my husband and 2 children. I specialize in working with children who have communication disorders, autism spectrum disorders and apraxia. In my professional experience, sensory regulation is a crucial building block in neurodiverse therapies and daily living. I started PRE BOX in 2022 because I realized there was a need for something of its kind in my profession. I knew that looking at a toy through the eyes of a parent versus those of a speech therapist are two very different things. I would often get asked by parents, “what toys should I play with at home with my child?” And “how do I play with these toys with my child?” As a speech therapist and mom, I know that engaged and regulated children can reach their full potential with reduced stress and anxiety. Play that engages all five senses not only enhances communication skills but also helps children navigate daily life more effectively. So, I decided to pack my knowledge into a box to provide families with tools to prepare for key life experiences in a fun, sensory rich way!

When Rachel shared her vision for a sensory box company dedicated to neurodivergent individuals, I was immediately on board. Sensory regulation and communication are deeply interconnected, and using our expertise to enhance this understanding is truly fulfilling. As a pediatric speech-language pathologist specializing in neurodiversity-affirming therapy, I am passionate about integrating sensory-informed care into my practice. My goal is to provide families with the same tools and knowledge to support their children’s sensory and communication needs in everyday life. My career in speech-language pathology is driven by a commitment to equip children with the resources to thrive. I strive to make speech therapy a fun, engaging experience that the child enjoys and looks forward to. Building a strong connection and believing in each child’s potential are the pillars of my approach to speech therapy.
